Marlene Trestman '78 is a lawyer and the author of Most Fortunate Unfortunates: The Jewish Orphans' Home of New Orleans (LSU Press, October 2023). A 1978 Phi Beta Kappa graduate, AAGC president, and former trustee of Goucher College, Trestman received her law degree from George Washington University and her MBA from Loyola University of Maryland. For the last decade of Trestman's thirty-year legal career with the Maryland Attorney General's office, she served as Special Assistant to the Attorney General and was responsible for enforcing laws related to public health and consumer protection. In her new book, Most Fortunate Unfortunates, native New Orleanian Marlene Trestman presents the first comprehensive history of that city's Jewish Orphans' Home, the earliest purpose-built Jewish orphanage in the nation. Considered a "Magnificent Monument to Hebrew Benevolence," from 1856 to 1946 the Home sheltered 1623 children from seven states while uniting and elevating the profile of Jews throughout the South. The result of a decade of research and more than 100 interviews, Most Fortunate Unfortunates sheds light on institutional policies while relating stories of the Home's children and the people who cared for them - for better and for worse. Jean H. Baker, Goucher's beloved history professor emerita, lauds it as an "outstanding study . . . that gives readers a sense of what it was like to be one of those 'fortunate unfortunates.'" According to Southern Jewish History founder Mark Bauman, "Most Fortunate Unfortunates belongs on the reading list of everyone interested in childcare and education, as well as southern and American Jewish and general history." Our moderator is Rabbi Josh Snyder, Executive Director of Goucher Hillel.
